First, stay calm and don't resist — that only adds charges. Invoke your rights clearly: "I am invoking my right to remain silent" and "I want an attorney." Then stop talking. Anything you say will be used against you, and police are trained to keep you talking. Don't consent to searches. Don't try to explain your way out of it — that almost never works and usually makes things worse. If you're arrested, you'll be taken to booking and should have a first appearance hearing within 24 hours where bond is set.
