If you recieve a grand jury subpoena, it is important to contact an experienced New York criminal defense lawyer.  After investigating your case, the lawyer may advise you whether you need counsel to deal with the District Attorney or whether you are safe to proceed without counsel.  If you are the victim of a crime and have no possible criminal exposure, generally you will not need counsel to advise you on your grand jury appearance.  If you are a witness, or may have some criminal exposure, even if remote, you will likely want an attorney to intervene and speak with the assigned prosecutor.

The first thing you should do if contacted to appear before a Grand Jury is contact an experienced attorney that can guide you on what that process will be like and potentially prevent the need from actually testifying.  There are options on how to reply that most people dont know about, that's why it's important to seek professional guidance right away.
