Depending on the facts of your circumstances, you can request that the Court order your husband to contribute to your attorneys' fees and costs. Most lawyers will take your matter on in a limited scope capacity and have you pay a smaller-than-usual retainer ($3,500 - $5,000) to make this request on your behalf. Also, you do not need a lawyer to do this. The Ventura Court has a self-help center on the third floor. It is free. You need to make an appointment. They will help you fill out the forms and get the request filed with the court. They cannot give you legal advice. The important part is getting in front of a judge so you can tell your story about the funds available to your husband, the lack of similar funds for you, and ask the court to have your husband contribute to your fees. There is law for that.
