How soon I can start divorce process. I want to get divorce fast.
Asked in Renton, WA on August 12, 2026 Last answered on September 2, 2026I want to get divorce. Have been married for 22 years. I have two kids. 14 and 11 year old. Husband is alcoholic. His behavior impacts kids mental so much. Every night he gets drunk and due to past few incidents related to fight. Kids have anxiety and they can't sleep until late night due to his distribution. We want to get out of this situation as soon as possible.

You can start the divorce process immediately. It requires filing and serving a summons, divorce petition, and in King County, a few additional forms. There are self-help packets available at Washington Law Help (I can't post the link, but it's an easy Google search). However, it takes at least 90 days after you file the divorce petition and serve your husband before you can finalize the divorce. And that assumes that your soon-to-be-ex either signed off on the agreed divorce orders or you defaulted him. If he disagrees with any terms and you can't reach an agreement within that 90-day window, expect the process to take longer.
