How can one parent take away parental rights from the other parent?
Asked in Fresno, CA on June 23, 2026 Last answered on June 25, 2026Mother of the children is seeking to take away parental rights from the Father of the children. Mother is getting married and wants Father to give up parental rights. Father lives out of state and pays child support. Mother will not allow Father to have any contact. Mother has even gone as far as to tell the children the Father is dead.

Father needs to go to court and assert his role as a parent. It is highly unlikely, all things being equal, that Father will lose parental rights (that is a HUGE deal) under the circumstances you describe. That said, Father should be proactive about seeing his children and being a part of their lives. If Father can afford it, he should talk to a lawyer asap.
