This kind of injury involves two parts: (1) The helmet itself, and (2) the school's involvement. If there was some malfunction or liability based design on the helmet, your legal options are going to be more focused on product liability. However, if there was some risky training drills, unsupervised coaching, or conditions on the field that would essentially create an unnecessary risk to minors. Both aspects of this kind of injury need to be explored. Also, a very careful evaluation of the child's neck, back, and brain has to be done to rule out any long-term injury (some of the most serious kind).
File a government claim form if you don't retain counsel within 60 days. There is an assumption of risk argument - develop why the injury was not simply because of normal use/football.
