Got a speeding ticket in Denver for 25-39 mph over. Need to appear in court. Have a clean record. Should I get a lawyer?
Asked in Denver, CO on February 13, 2026 Last answered on July 2, 2026I was driving 83 in a 55 and am scheduled for traffic court on March 19th. I'm 22 and have no prior offenses. Is it likely that my penalty will be automatically reduced from a misdemeanor to an infraction and fewer points? What is typical in this situation? If I get a lawyer, might it get reduced even more and avoid the need for a court appearance?

Free Consultation Generally, whether there is a necessity to hire a lawyer in a traffic case is case dependent. However, in Colorado drivers over 21 have 11 points within a 12 month period that they can have assessed against their license without facing a points suspension. Once the driver hits or exceeds 12 points, they risk a points suspension with the DMV. A lawyer would certainly be advisable in a case where one is alleged to have been speeding nearly 30 mph in excess of the speed limit -- if, for no other reason, in order to preserve as many points as possible on your license for the future.
