Can I see my own doctor for a work injury?

Asked in Atlanta, GA on November 22, 2024 Last answered on March 5, 2026

My employer is insisting I see their doctor after I sprained my ankle at work. I have a family doctor I trust more. Do I have to go to the company's doctor, or can I choose my own?

Workers compensation will only pay for doctors that are authorized under the workers compensation statute. Typically, an employer has a posted panel of physicians that have been preapproved and can be seen for a work related injury. One of the benefits of being injured on the job is that you have no co-pays and are not responsible for any of the medical cost at these providers in an accepted compensable workers compensation case. Unfortunately, your family doctor, who you may rightfully trust for, is most likely not an approved workers, compensation doctor, and therefore will not be paid by workers compensation insurance. in fact, if you treat for a work related injury with your family physician, your health insurance may deny the claim and you'll be stuck with an additional bill. This does not mean you cannot see your family doctor, it just means that you will most likely be responsible for the bill if you do.
