I hurt my back lifting boxes at my job. I told my supervisor, but I'm not sure what else I need to do. What steps should I take right away to make sure I'm covered?

There are three steps you should take in order to ensure that your workers compensation rights are preserved.

  • The first step is that even though you reported the injury to your supervisor, you should get a copy of a written report that either they have to fill out, or you have to fill out. It is vital to document your injury in order to toll the notice requirement of the workers compensation statute.
  • The second step you should take is that you should ask your employer for a copy of the panel of physicians which they should have posted at their job. These physicians are authorized providers and Worker's Compensation insurance will pay for your visit to these doctors if you were injured on the job.
  • The third thing you should do is go get medical treatment with one of these doctors. While there, be clear and concise and inform the medical provider that you were injured on the job. Discuss with them in specificity how you were injured and ensure that it is documented.
