I have filed a substantial post-judgment motion to reconsider my contested divorce. Is there any hope to acquire an attorney?

Asked in Galesburg, IL on July 9, 2026 Last answered on October 1, 2026

My lawyer withdrew 35 days prior to trial, I received my complete file 21 days prior to my final trial and 2 days after I filed pro se and for a motion for continuance. I did not know to put it on the docket, and it was denied on the spot at the final trial. I then represented myself at the final trial and was not prepared. I only received the significant financials 25 hours prior to final trial. There were no settlement discussions or proposals prior to trial. There were significant discrepancies between the judgment, the docket, and the judicial entry for that date. So I ordered the transcripts. I received the transcripts on the 30th day and filed my motion that night, with notice that the exhibits are to follow as I go over the transcript. The hearing is set. Significant financial issues, omitted assets, altered earnings, etc. I am desperately in need of legal help. I have no money for large retainers at this moment, but I don't expect anyone to work for free -- is there any way around this?

I am so sorry you went through this. Your best option to is ask the court to vacate it's decision because requested proof of marital assets were not tendered.

“[T]he petitioner must show the new evidence was not known to [him or] her at the time of the proceeding and could not have been discovered by the petitioner with the exercise of reasonable diligence. Stated another way, the evidence must be such as could not reasonably have been discovered at the time of or prior to the entry of the judgment.” MARRIAGE OF BRUBAKER v. Brubaker, 2022 IL App (2d) 200160 – Ill: Appellate Court, 2nd Dist. 2022 (citations and quotation omitted)
