Can I file an RFO in california because the attorney I hired did not two months ago?
Asked in San Jose, CA | April 28, 2026I am a stay-at-home mother who has been caring for the kids for approximately 10 years. My husband and I have been married for 12 years with two small children, ages 6 and 9. He abandoned the home at the end of February and only infrequently provides me with funds. He routinely forwards me utility bills, knowing I have no income. He said he will take all of the utilities out of his name. He has threatened to take full custody of my children because I am without a job. His income is $615,000; however, he structured his paycheck in a way that he only brings home 6,000 every two weeks. He invests the rest. I have no access to any funds other than what is in the joint bank account. I asked my lawyer to file for a temporary. He has been incredibly financially and psychologically abusive since I became a stay-at-home mom. He has also yelled at me several times and has pushed me on occasion.

Never married, separated, one child age 4. Mother withholds child visitation at will. Falsely accuses father of abuse. What do I do?
Asked in Monterey, CA | July 6, 2026Separated as partners 3 years ago. She states she is "afraid" of me (I have never abused her in any way). She makes up stories and has called the police twice. She disapproved of an activity I took my son to, and screamed at me about it in front of the child (and my mother). Then excluded me, my family, and my friends from the child's birthday party, and said if we came she would call the police. There is no custody order at this time, and never any restraining orders or arrests against me after police investigated her claims. I would like 50% custody but I'm afraid court might believe her lies.

How to terminate parental rights due to abandonment?
Asked in San Jose, CA | July 23, 2026I have no rights as my stepson's mother. His mother abandoned him when he was 10 months old due to substance abuse/addiction, multiple incarcerations, and starting a relationship with my husband's cousin. She has been released on parole recently and wants her rights to parent even though she has not been around. My son is 12 years old. I need help terminating her rights as a parent.

If I’ve been slandered and lied about and going to court because of it, what do I do?
Asked in Visalia, CA | July 27, 2026I took my daughter's cell phone away and went to the grocery store, came home, and was arrested. I’ve been going to court now for almost 4 years. I’ve gone to family court and now criminal court. They took my daughter away. My daughter completely lied, and I have a lot of information in proof, and nobody will do anything for me to help me through this, but more than that, my rights have been violated at least 1000 times through this whole process. This is ridiculous, and I don’t know what to do.

Wife sprained (grade 2) ankle at a park, ER visit required. Insurance offered $250 settlement. Is this typical or low?
Asked in Los Angeles, CA | August 21, 2026My wife suffered a Grade 2 ankle sprain at a RV park, which required an ambulance and an ER visit. She continues to have lingering pain and was unable to attend physical therapy due to our current living situation. The at-fault insurance company has offered a $250 settlement in exchange for a full and final release of all claims. We have approximately $131 in out-of-pocket expenses; the rest of the medical costs were covered by Medi-Cal. I have two main questions: 1. Is a $250 settlement typical for an injury requiring an ER visit and ambulance transport, or is this significantly undervalued? 2. We are on Medi-Cal. Does accepting this $250 settlement impact our eligibility or monthly income reporting? We are concerned about income thresholds. Does this settlement count as income, and does it require us to reimburse the Medi-Cal lien for past services? We have not signed the release yet.
